Côte d’Ivoire: The Undisputed Leader

As of 2023, Côte d’Ivoire produced 2.38 million tonnes of cocoa beans, accounting for over two-fifths of global supply. The country's dominance is rooted in decades of investment in cocoa farming, although recent discussions have called for better remuneration for farmers and more sustainable practices.

Ghana and Indonesia Follow Closely

Ghana, with 653,700 tonnes (11.6%), and Indonesia, with 641,740 tonnes (11.4%), follow as the second and third-largest producers respectively. Ghana, despite its smaller land area, continues to be a powerhouse thanks to regulated systems and strong institutional frameworks.

While production is strong, the global cocoa industry is facing increasing pressure around sustainability, fair pricing, and climate change. Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana in particular are at the forefront of calls for a living income for farmers and improved trade terms.

As the 2023 numbers reveal, global cocoa production remains as geographically concentrated as ever. With Côte d’Ivoire leading the charge and other African nations playing vital roles, the future of chocolate still lies in the rich soils of West Africa.
