🤰 Where do women in Africa have the most children? Here's the 2023 ranking by average births per woman. #DataForDevelopment

Fertility rate in Sub-Saharan Africa

In 2023, the average woman in Somalia gave birth to over six children, the highest fertility rate on the African continent. Joining Somalia at the top of the fertility chart are Chad, Niger, DR Congo, and the Central African Republic—each with a total fertility rate (TFR) exceeding six children per woman.

What Is the Total Fertility Rate (TFR)?

TFR is a widely used demographic indicator that estimates the average number of children a woman would have if she experienced current age-specific fertility rates throughout her childbearing years. It reflects both cultural norms and access to reproductive healthcare.

These figures, sourced from the @WorldBank

, place all five countries well above the Sub-Saharan Africa average (approximately 4.6) and far beyond the global average (2.3 in 2023).

Why Does This Matter?

- High fertility rates often correlate with:

- Limited access to family planning services

- Lower educational attainment among women

- Higher infant mortality rates

- Strain on economic and environmental resources

For policymakers, these figures are a double-edged sword: a growing population can be an engine for economic growth if properly harnessed, but can also stress infrastructure, healthcare, and education systems.

Regional Context

Interestingly, these high-fertility countries are mostly located in the Sahel and Central Africa—regions often characterized by conflict, poverty, and limited access to health and education services.
