What It Means for the Continent's Economic Future
Introduction
Africa is often discussed as a single economic bloc, but beneath the continental narrative lies a striking reality: economic output is heavily concentrated in a handful of countries.
According to World Bank data, just five countries, South Africa, Egypt, Algeria, Nigeria, and Morocco, generated approximately $1.47 trillion in economic output in 2024, representing 50.9% of Africa's total GDP of $2.89 trillion.
In other words, five economies produce slightly more economic value than the remaining 47 countries combined.
