In early April 2026, Ghanaian creators on X (formerly Twitter) began reporting a frustrating trend: their last two payout cycles had failed to reflect in their accounts.
Below, we break down what we know so far and the explanations circulating about why these payments are being stalled.
Disclaimer:Â This article is based on current user reports and screenshots circulating on X (formerly Twitter) as of April 17, 2026. At the time of writing, no official statements or formal confirmations have been issued by the Bank of Ghana, Stripe, or Paystack regarding these specific payout failures.

The Evidence: "Returned" Payouts
The confusion started when creators began receiving automated emails from Stripe. These messages stated that while Stripe had successfully initiated the deposits, local Ghanaian banks had "returned" the payouts.

Furthermore, correspondence shared by users suggests that Stripe has temporarily suspended creating new payouts and onboarding new accounts in Ghana. The reason cited? An unresolved issue with a "regional banking partner".

The Central Question: Why are banks returning the money?
Currently, there is no official statement from the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Stripe, or Paystack explaining the rejection of these funds. In this information vacuum, two main explanations have emerged among creators:
1. The Taxation Theory
Many creators suspect a move by the government to begin taxing digital earnings. The speculation is that the Bank of Ghana and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) are intentionally holding payments until a framework for taxing creator income is finalized. However, it is important to note there is no official proof of this yet.

2. The Regulatory Theory
A more technical explanation points to the Bank of Ghana’s new International Money Transfer Operator (IMTO) regulations, which were updated in January 2026.
Speculation suggests that Paystack (Paystack, Stripe’s African subsidiary) may not yet meet the specific, Bank of Ghana requirements needed to process these payouts to creators in Ghana. Consequently payments have been suspended to creators in Ghana.

What Happens Next?
For now, Ghanaian creators are in a state of limbo. While the community continues to look for answers, the true cause of the payout failure remains unconfirmed by official institutions. Until the Bank of Ghana, Stripe, or Paystack provides a formal update, the bridge between global earnings and local accounts remains stalled.
