What the Numbers Reveal About the 9th Parliament

Religion is an important part of Ghanaian society, yet discussions about the religious composition of Parliament are relatively rare. By analysing the official profiles of all 270 Members of Parliament in Ghana's 9th Parliament, an interesting picture emerges of how religious affiliation is distributed across political parties.

Religious affiliation in Ghana's 9th Parliament

According to data extracted from official parliamentary profiles, 215 MPs identify as Christians, representing 79.6% of Parliament. Forty-eight MPs identify as Muslims, accounting for 17.8%, while two Independent MPs identify as Christians. Five MPs did not state a religious affiliation on their official profiles.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), with 179 MPs, accounts for 139 Christian MPs and 40 Muslim MPs. The New Patriotic Party (NPP), with 84 MPs, comprises 76 Christian MPs and eight Muslim MPs.

One of the most striking findings is that although the NDC has just over twice as many MPs as the NPP, it has exactly five times as many Muslim MPs. This reflects differences in the demographic composition of each party's parliamentary caucus rather than any direct inference about party ideology or religious policy.

Overall, Christianity remains the dominant religion among Ghana's legislators, broadly reflecting the country's national religious profile. Muslim representation, while smaller, remains significant, particularly within the NDC.

It is important to note that this analysis is based solely on information voluntarily provided by MPs on their official parliamentary profiles. It does not measure personal religiosity, religious practice, or policy positions.
