The Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu Timeline:

From MASLOC CEO to Court of Appeal Acquittal.

The legal battle involving former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu has become one of Ghana's most closely watched public sector corruption cases. Spanning more than a decade, the case has moved from allegations of financial misconduct to extradition from the United States and, most recently, a landmark Court of Appeal ruling that overturned her conviction.

Appointment to MASLOC

Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu served as Chief Executive Officer of MASLOC from November 2013 to January 2017. During her tenure, MASLOC administered government-backed microfinance and small business lending programmes intended to expand financial inclusion.

Criminal Charges

In January 2019, Ghana's Attorney-General charged her and Operations Manager Daniel Axim with 78 counts, including stealing, causing financial loss to the state, money laundering, and procurement-related offences. The prosecution alleged that millions of cedis were improperly disbursed during her leadership.

Trial and Conviction

After leaving Ghana for medical treatment in 2021 and failing to return, the High Court continued proceedings in her absence. On 16 April 2024, the court convicted her on multiple counts and sentenced her to ten years' imprisonment with hard labour, while Daniel Axim received a five-year sentence.

Extradition from the United States

Ghana formally sought her extradition in 2024. Following legal proceedings in Nevada, U.S. authorities extradited her to Ghana in June 2026 to begin serving the sentence imposed by the High Court. The case marked one of the most prominent recent extraditions between the United States and Ghana.

Court of Appeal Decision

On 30 July 2026, Ghana's Court of Appeal unanimously overturned both the conviction and the ten-year sentence, holding that the prosecution had failed to establish its case beyond reasonable doubt. The ruling effectively acquitted and discharged Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu.

Is the Case Over?

Not yet.

The Attorney-General has filed a Notice of Appeal to the Supreme Court, arguing that the Court of Appeal's decision should be reviewed. Until the Supreme Court determines whether to hear and decide the appeal, the legal process remains ongoing. Meanwhile, co-accused Daniel Axim remains on bail pending the outcome of his separate appeal.
