Toyota Corolla Fuel Cost in Ghana: GH¢35.50 in 2006 vs GH¢813 in 2026
Fuel prices have changed dramatically in Ghana over the past two decades. One simple way to illustrate that change is to look at the cost of filling a familiar vehicle: the Toyota Corolla.

A 2006 Toyota Corolla has a 50-litre fuel tank. Using the petrol price recorded at the start of 2006, the cost of filling that tank was about GH¢35.50.
The petrol price of GH¢0.71 per litre used for the 2006 calculation comes from the National Petroleum Authority's historical petroleum pricing data. The NPA is Ghana's downstream petroleum regulator and maintains historical information on petroleum prices.
At GH¢0.71 per litre:
50 litres × GH¢0.71 = GH¢35.50
Fast forward 20 years and the calculation looks very different.
For the September 2026 pricing period, COPEC projected an average petrol price of GH¢16.26 per litre. At that price, filling a 50-litre tank would cost:
50 litres × GH¢16.26 = GH¢813.00
That means filling the same 50-litre tank costs approximately 23 times as much as it did at the start of 2006.
The difference in cash terms is:
GH¢813.00 - GH¢35.50 = GH¢777.50
So, compared with the petrol price at the start of 2006, a 50-litre fill-up in September 2026 would require GH¢777.50 more.
It is important to clarify what this comparison does and does not show. The GH¢0.71 figure represents the petrol price at the start of 2006, rather than an annual average or the price at the end of that year. Similarly, the GH¢16.26 figure for 2026 is a COPEC projection, rather than a claim that every filling station charged exactly that amount.
The comparison is therefore best understood as a snapshot of how the nominal cost of buying the same quantity of petrol has changed between two points separated by 20 years.
Ghana's petroleum pricing system has also changed significantly during this period. Before deregulation, petroleum prices were set by the National Petroleum Authority. Ghana began implementing petroleum price deregulation in 2015, shifting price-setting responsibilities to players in the downstream petroleum market. Under the current framework, petroleum products such as petrol, diesel and LPG are deregulated, while the NPA sets and communicates applicable price floors.
Fuel prices are influenced by several factors, including international petroleum prices, exchange rates, taxes, levies and margins. The NPA's prescribed pricing framework incorporates these components when petroleum prices are determined.
For motorists, however, the calculation is much simpler.
In 2006:
50 litres = GH¢35.50
In 2026:
50 litres = GH¢813.00
The Toyota Corolla's tank has not become 23 times larger. The comparison simply shows how much the nominal price of the same 50 litres of petrol has changed over two decades.
And that makes the comparison a useful way to put Ghana's long-term fuel-price changes into perspective. Join our WhatsApp group to receive data viz insights on Ghana and Africa directly: https://chat.whatsapp.com/JCqBvBWfqjILTxiaCqFhCx?mode=wwt
