Which Bank Was the Most Profitable in Ghana in 2025?

Full Ranking of All 23 Banks

Ghana's banking industry delivered another year of strong profitability in 2025, although the gains were concentrated among a handful of institutions. Based on published financial statements, the country's 23 banks generated approximately GH¢23 billion in profit before tax (PBT), highlighting the continued resilience of the sector despite a challenging macroeconomic environment.

Leading the rankings was GCB Bank, which reported GH¢3.163 billion in profit before tax. It was followed closely by Ecobank Ghana, Absa Bank Ghana, and Stanbic Bank Ghana. Together, these four institutions generated approximately GH¢11.5 billion in pre-tax profit, accounting for roughly half of the industry's total earnings.

The rankings reveal a highly concentrated banking sector. While eight banks exceeded GH¢1 billion in profit before tax, the remaining fifteen institutions earned less than that threshold. The gap between fourth-placed Stanbic Bank and fifth-placed GTBank exceeded GH¢1 billion, illustrating a clear divide between the industry's largest profit generators and the rest of the market.

Using profit before tax rather than profit after tax provides a more consistent measure of operational performance. Profit after tax can vary significantly because of deferred tax assets, tax credits, and bank-specific levies that affect reported earnings without necessarily reflecting underlying business strength. For this reason, PBT offers a clearer basis for comparing banks across the industry.

The data also highlights notable differences in profit retention. Most banks converted between 60% and 65% of pre-tax profit into after-tax earnings.

However, First Bank Ghana and Consolidated Bank Ghana retained a much smaller share after taxes and levies, while NIB and FNB retained almost all of their pre-tax earnings, largely because of deferred tax effects rather than unusually low tax rates.

One of the year's most remarkable stories was NIB's recovery. After recording only GH¢3.1 million in profit before tax in 2024, the bank rebounded to GH¢382.1 million in 2025. In contrast, both Fidelity Bank Ghana and Consolidated Bank Ghana experienced significant declines in profitability compared with the previous year.

The 2025 rankings demonstrate that Ghana's banking sector remains profitable and resilient, but they also show that industry earnings are increasingly concentrated among a small number of large institutions. As banks continue to strengthen their balance sheets, improve asset quality, and expand digital banking services, profitability will remain one of the key indicators investors, regulators, and customers watch most closely.
