Domestic air travel in Ghana has become significantly more expensive. A one-way ticket from Accra to Kumasi, which cost just about ¢455 in January 2022, now averages ¢1,570 in 2025. This represents a staggering 245% increase over three years, making domestic air travel less accessible for many Ghanaians.

The Numbers

Data from Africa World Airlines and Passion Air show a consistent rise in ticket prices:

  • January 2022: ¢455 average (Accra to Kumasi)

  • June 2025: ¢1,570 average

  • Current fare range (Africa World): ¢1,316 – ¢2,044

  • Current fare range (Passion Air): ¢1,045 – ¢1,490

What’s Driving the Price Surge?

Several key factors may explain this sharp rise:

  1. Fuel Costs: Global jet fuel prices have remained high post-pandemic, contributing significantly to operational costs.

  2. Currency Depreciation: The Ghana cedi has experienced notable fluctuations. While currently stabilizing, previous depreciation periods increased the cost of aircraft maintenance, fuel (priced in USD), and spare parts.

  3. Limited Competition: Ghana’s domestic aviation market is served by only a few airlines. With limited players and high demand, pricing power lies with the airlines.

  4. Rising Inflation: Inflationary pressures have impacted not just ticket pricing but the broader cost of operations, staff wages, airport fees, and auxiliary services.

Implications for Travelers

This sharp increase could push middle-income travelers to consider alternative modes of transport such as long-distance buses. It also has broader implications for business travel, regional tourism, and logistics.

Final Thoughts

As the aviation sector evolves, stakeholders including regulators, airlines, and fuel suppliers must consider strategies that balance profitability with affordability. More competitive pricing models, subsidies on aviation fuel, or investments in regional airstrips could help lower the burden on travelers.
